Halcyon

08 April 2015

There is something uniquely special about coming out of hibernation as spring enters our world.  The peeling of clothes, the throwing open of doors and windows letting spring into the house.

As I fold my washing, the first this year that has that special smell.  A smell that holds a thousand memories that waft around me.  The birds singing, bees buzzing, strawberries picked and eaten straight from the plant, sleeping under the stars.

We are standing on the threshold, waiting.

What memories will we forge?

Playful

27 March 2015

As I open my curtains each morning, I welcome the world back into my house.  It's the best kind of surprise not knowing what will be revealed*.  It keeps me in check with the seasons, that first glimpse a feel for what weather each day might bring.  I never cease to be enchanted and many a day I take a long pause to soak it all in.

For now, my view includes lambs.  I could sit and watch them for hours.  Those first wobbly steps close to their mothers.  As they grow they group together, gambolling.  Its infectious.  All four limbs leave the ground.  The sheer exuberance of it the essence of spring.

Spring is an awakening.  In every sense.  Whilst watching those lambs my own limbs have a strong desire to move, to emerge from the stillness of Winter and hibernation.

I want to be outside.  I want to embrace the light, the warmth, the sounds, the smells, wrap myself up in them all.

I carry that morning memory with me as I start the day, I know all will be good.

The washing needs loading

The sun is shining

The surfaces need dusting

Hair needs brushing

The sun is shining

The carpets need a hoover

The washing machine has finished

The sun is still shining

There are lists to write

Can you read this book, Mama?

They do not swamp me or choke me

Are they my burdens?

They will be done,

sometime

The sun is calling me

Outside we go

Focus

11 February 2015

Every morning on getting up the list of things 'to do' is long.
It feels like it gets longer each day as new jobs are added and old ones are not crossed off.
The overwhelm makes the sofa an attractive place to sit and hide.
Displacement activity some would call it.

Then a little light comes on, a seed of an idea..........

The list doesn't have to be done all at once, does it?
One thing at a time,
reduce the focus.

If there are too many mountains to climb in one day,
exhaustion sets in before starting.

Staying in the moment,
when the list is long,
focusing on each task,
enjoying it,
then moving on......

There, that's better.

Far more sustaining.

Life....

06 February 2015

...right now...

We are six weeks into this year.

Six weeks of bumpiness
of feeling that we are not quite on 'our' rails.
Slightly off track
with more illness than in the last six years.
Our rhythm is out of sync
with illness and weather cancelling our plans.
We are happy
content in our togetherness.

Life is golden like the reeds.

I wonder what the future will bring..........

Constancy

16 January 2015

The green shoots of snowdrops are tentatively pushing their way above ground.

The days are gradually getting longer, an imperceptible change as the earth slowly tilts the Northern Hemisphere towards the sun.

The sun is the golden key to unlock the gates of nature's store of renewed life, to bring spring on its way.

Fallen

07 November 2014

Autumn is fading.  The temperatures are falling, many trees are now bare.  The dancing of leaves is slowing, they lie still, weighed down by the recent rain, the wind ripples over their surface teasing them.  They are beginning their slow journey returning to the earth.

We remember the hot summer days behind us, filled with warmth and light, our hearth is now this provider its heat and light wrapping us up through the dark cold of winter.

A time of reflection.

Loved ones no longer with us, but always in our thoughts.  Those that have given us a country at peace, reminding us it hasn't always been thus, giving us hope that one day those in conflict will find peace.

Thankful.

A man rides his bike to work, it is dark.  At two metre he sees an illegal obstruction barring the way he goes in and bounces out. Wonderful strangers offer comfort.  The road to recovery will be long.  My family breathes out, we have been spared.

May peace be with you.
