...is for Red...
...one of the colours of autumn along with golds, yellows, oranges, purples and browns. The trees are starting to slowly turn round these parts, splashes of yellow and red dot the trees. The leaves are starting to fall as the trees prepare themselves for the cold months of winter. Cells at the base of the leaf swell to slow down the transport of nutrients between the tree and the leaf, once it is totally blocked the leaf is blown away or falls off. The red colour in some leaves is created to stop attracting aphids who are attracted to the colour yellow. The yellow is a result of less chlorophyll in the leaf, which makes the leaf green, as the tree closes off the cells to the leaf.

I read somewhere that the colours are intensified if the weather is warm during the day and cold at night too. It's an amazing process isn't it and I would hate to live somewhere where the foliage was always green wouldn't you?!
ReplyDeleteThe autumn colours look so beautiful, don't they? I wish we had the autumn season where we live, but the leaves here don't change to anything but yellow! #alphabetphoto
ReplyDeleteGorgeous colour capture. So autumnal. x #alphabetphoto
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Autumn colours too! And this photo is a lovely reminder that it's just around the corner ;) #alphabetphoto.
ReplyDeleteApart from my blueberries which are a beautiful shade of red now, I'm only noticing the trees looking washed out so far. Gone is the vibrant green, the leaves are looking very dull and lifeless, so I'm sure there's be some beautiful hues coming very soon.
ReplyDeleteThese alphabet photography posts are great - I always learn something new.
ReplyDeleteThe leaves here are changing colour too.
Thank you!
DeleteNext weeks post will be a fun one - not much learning sorry!
We have a few reds coming through. Our dogwood has really turned. I love the colours of Autumn. #AlphabetPhoto
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to seeing this color in the coming days =) #AlphabetPhoto
ReplyDeleteSuch rich reds too. I noticed yesterday that many of the leaves here are well on the turn ... soon they will be falling I think.
ReplyDeleteMy little babe has been noticing the falling yellow leaves, so I was telling her about why they are yellow, but I didn't know about the cells swelling and closing. I thought it was just from less sunlight, so less photosynthesis. Learned something new today!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite season - love the colours!
ReplyDeleteFabulous, I love autumn and living in New England means that we really are surrounded by the most amazing trees x #alphabetphoto
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colours - where I grew up the trees in the Autumn used to turn so many different shades that the tourists used to visit the area just to see them. #AlphabetPhoto
ReplyDeleteI love the colours of autumn, just not what they signify - I like warmth!
