Today is the shortest day, this has always seemed a strange description to me as there are no less hours today than any other as I explained to my confused son. It does, of course, mean the least amount of daylight hours. It depends how far you live from the equator as to what this equates to. It has felt, over the last few days, as if it has never really been that light but that has been due to cloud cover. The shortest day for us means daylight from around 9am to around 3.30pm. It has been very cold, wet, windy and wild.
So now we welcome in the light, the days will become longer for the next six months until the cycle is reversed and so we go on.
