...is for Waterfall...

...I could sit and watch them for hours, the wonder of nature.  This one is Aira Force, a 65ft drop on Aira Beck, which is surrounded by the most beautiful woodland.  If you are ever in the area do pay it a visit, especially if it has been raining recently (it makes the waterfall more spectacular).  The name comes from Old  Norse, eyrr is a gravel bank, á a river, at the point this river meets Ullswater (a lake) there is a gravel bank.  The Force part of the name is from fors, waterfall.  The waterfall on the gravel bank river.

  1. Beautiful. I didn't know that about the word "force" - we visited High Force years ago and loved it. Have also been to Niagara and wasn;t nearly so taken with it as the lesser falls such as yours perhaps because it was all so commercialised which somehow diminished it.

  3. I recognised Aira straight away! I love waterfalls too. We recently visited Low Force and Summerhill Force (I think most refer to as Gibson's cave) in Teesdale. I could stand and watch them for hours. Hoping to get up to High Force and Cauldron's Snout next time we go up that way but I'm looking forward to Dungeon Ghyll in Langdale at half term :)

  5. Love it there although it's been a few years since I last visited - even better is to go to the waterfall, then go to the Royal Hotel at Dockray for lemon meringue pie...

  7. Same here, I could sit and watch for hours just staring at it, or even shutting my eyes and just listening to the water flow. Beautiful photography, btw :) #alphabetphoto.

  10. Water and waterfalls are mesmerising and a great way to while away some time (just as long as it's not raining too much too!). Fab photo!

  14. That looks like the most wonderful place, I love reading about the origins of its name. If I'm very lucky, I will get to see this in person some day - thanks for sharing :) xo
